Reflection

The 5th wave by Rick Yancey

One day, ‘Other’ came to Earth and destroying all stuff. People can’t use mobile phone and electricity. The Other is basically alien. They started controlling people to kill normal human. The main character called ‘Cassie’, had responsibility of protect his younger brother. Cassie had to fight against aliens and herself for survive from dangerous atmosphere. Her mom died by virus and her dad killed by army. She had to walk over 60 miles to reach army base to find young brother, ‘Sam’.

There are 5 waves in this book. Each waves has different disasters. Start from natural disaster, virus, can’t use electricity and can’t trust anyone in Earth. First wave was people can’t electricity, so they get  vehicle accident and die from it. Second wave was natural disaster, such as flood, earthquake and tsunami. Third wave was virus from birds. As mentioned in first paragraph Cassie’s mom died when she was treating people virus. Fourth wave was survive from Other. Other controlled people to kill normal human. We don’t know that fifth wave yet.   I think this book tried to tell us human’s psychology when they get into situations that wouldn’t be normal. People in this book weren’t calm or organize, because they all want to survive from Other. People became selfish and not helping other people.

I kind of enjoyed this book, it was just normal fiction book can be imagine easily. I sort of want to what is fifth wave. It was great book for me. After I finish this book, I recognized there is movie version as well. Even movie version is not fun to watch. Maybe I just didn’t like the story wise.

Persuasive

Alex Ferguson by Alex Ferguson

A lot of people know Alex Ferguson as football coach in Manchester United football club. Yes, he is football coach, but he is also greatest leader all time in history. People might think being a leader in sports team is easier, but it’s not. During 26 years of coaching career, he met so many football player. And most of football players played in Manchester United club said he is greatest leader.

When he scouts new players, he takes them to his office to have short conversation and he asks same question. ‘What do you see in this picture?,’ picture shows geese flying in sky and he says ‘that is teamwork.’ Geese flies more 1000 miles to travel around the world, they always make noise while flying. That noise isn’t just noise, geese are cheering up other geese that falling behind. He taught players in club about how to be a good teammates to others. Never say something negative to teammates, players should say something can cheer your teammates up.

Alex Ferguson had nickname, it’s hairdryer, because he shouted at players really badly in lockeroom. Of course, it doesn’t sound right. He just showed geese picture and shouted at player. But players needs to have some yell can wake them up. Cristiano Ronaldo is amazing player, but he couldn't avoid punish from coach and he played amazing game after hearing punish from Alex Ferguson. People usually keep that in mind for while, but he wasn’t at all. The day after he shouted, he just joking with players and be really nice to them. He is good at shake that off and reset his mind. He says keep negative memory from past is such a non-meaningful.

Alex Ferguson sees Manchester United player is not having good life, such as drinking in pub, go to club and not joining practice. He doesn’t give second chance, he just kick that player out of the club. Basically, he controlled all the players. He made them have correct mind set during season.

There are more leadership skills other than that. I’m kind of out of space, so I can’t say more stuff about him. Students in HIS should read this book, because we all going to have at least one time to lead some groups. Small to big group. I know everyone has different perspective of leadership skills, but stuff he been doing made Manchester United to win so many titles. We won’t reach the point that win football league championship, it is totally worth it to know and keep that in mind.
